Strange sight in DC…
…that was not the product of heat exhaustion (I think). A protest group against reliance on oil rode their bicycles through the city – naked, or as close to naked as legally possible. It definitely grabbed attention. We were in the city showing friends from CA the sights (albeit in a slogging, humidity-induced haze), and were just talking about how Matt and I don’t mind taking all of our visitors to DC because we always see something different. You can check out the official link for the group, but I don’t think I’ll be posting my photos of the protest here (love you Gram!). I have no idea about the ideologies of the group or their affiliations, but hey, a protest this extreme at least needs a blog mention, right?

A new question
There are quite a few panhandlers near my office. Today I had a pleasant exchange with a woman to whom I first said “good morning.” We shared niceties and then she asked “Are you homeless?” I was a little confused because I was dressed for work (minus comfy shoes for the long walk), so I said no. She asked so sincerely that I wasn’t offended at all – she really wanted to make sure that I wasn’t homeless too before she asked for money.
Matt’s a good guy: pt. 1
We have been doing too many suburb runs lately with the house remodel, but after yet another Lowe’s stop, Matt surprised me by going to sushi at our favorite place in Towson. It’s in a ridiculous strip mall, but the sushi is really good and inexpensive. It’s right next to Panera Bread, which is always packed – I can’t figure out why more of those people aren’t getting sushi instead. Next time you have to make a Target stop there, check out Sushi Ichiban. It’s not quite up there with good west coast or NY sushi, but definitely the best I’ve had in B-more.

Gardening
I’m not really that fond of weeding and digging in the dirt, but it sure is a great way to meet people. Our newly purchased, yet-to-be-inhabited project house is really close to the Saturday farmer’s market, and it’s fun to be out there planting flowers when everyone is walking to and from the market. We’ve lived in our apartment for almost a year just around the corner from our new place, but since we never had reasons to be out doing things in the community (no dogs to walk, no kids to take to the open space, no planting out front, etc.), it’s been hard to meet neighbors. Not anymore, though! I’ve already met many of the families on our block just by trying to clean up our 20 square feet of dirt. And while having a garden is a commitment, it’s less responsibility than a dog OR a kid.
This toy display was too funny. You can’t tell from the photo, but all of the dolls were in motion.
